Still the value benchmark in full frame. Newer bodies beat it on screens, video specifications and menu design, but for photographs the A7 III remains outstanding and the lens ecosystem makes it a safe long-term platform.

Our take

Sony A7 III review: the full-frame camera that is still worth buying

Years after launch, the A7 III remains one of the smartest full-frame buys in the UK — superb autofocus, excellent low light and a lens ecosystem nothing else matches at the price.

What we like

  • Full-frame sensor with genuinely excellent low-light performance
  • Eye autofocus that still embarrasses much newer cameras
  • Huge E-mount lens range, new and second-hand
  • Dual card slots and strong battery life

What to watch

  • Rear screen and viewfinder feel dated
  • Menus are notoriously convoluted
  • Single-axis tilt screen is awkward for vlogging
  • Body only — budget for glass

Quick answers

Is the Sony A7 III still worth buying?

For stills, absolutely. The 24MP full-frame sensor, autofocus and battery life are still competitive, and prices have fallen a long way from launch. You are buying a mature, reliable camera with an enormous lens range behind it.

Does "body only" mean no lens?

Yes. You will need to buy at least one lens separately. A 50mm prime is the cheapest way to see what the sensor can do; a 24-105mm or 28-70mm zoom is the more flexible starting point.

How good is the low-light performance?

Very. A full-frame sensor gathers far more light than the APS-C chips in cheaper cameras, so high-ISO images stay clean where smaller sensors turn noisy. It is one of the main reasons to step up to full frame at all.
