Our take

Sony A6700 review: the best APS-C hybrid Sony makes

AI-driven subject tracking, a fully articulating screen and serious video specifications in a compact body. The A6700 is the APS-C camera to buy if you shoot both stills and video.

What we like

  • Excellent AI-based subject recognition and tracking
  • Fully articulating screen — finally good for video
  • Strong video specification including 10-bit capture
  • Compact body with a proper front control dial

What to watch

  • Priciest APS-C body in the range
  • Kit zoom does not do the sensor justice
  • Rolling shutter still visible on fast pans
  • Menus remain a Sony acquired taste

Quick answers

Is the A6700 good for video?

Yes, and it is the first camera in this line properly designed for it — the fully articulating screen flips out to the side so you can see yourself, and 10-bit recording gives you room to grade footage.

A6700 vs A6400 — is it worth the extra?

If you shoot video, comfortably. The flip-out screen, better stabilisation and improved tracking are all significant. If you shoot stills only, the A6400 saves a lot of money for broadly similar photographs.

Should I keep the kit lens?

The 16-50mm is compact and convenient but it is the weakest part of the package. A fast prime — something like a 35mm f/1.8 — transforms what this camera produces, especially indoors.
