The right camera for situations you would never risk a phone in. Image quality is ordinary, but a mediocre photograph of your children in a pool beats no photograph, and beats a drowned phone by rather more.

Our take

Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2 review: a waterproof camera you can hand to anyone

Waterproof, shockproof and dustproof, at a price that makes it genuinely expendable. The WPZ2 is the pool, beach and rockpool camera — not a photographic instrument.

What we like

  • Waterproof, shockproof and dustproof out of the box
  • Cheap enough to risk at a beach or pool
  • Simple enough for children
  • No housing or case needed

What to watch

  • Modest image quality, particularly underwater
  • Small screen and basic controls
  • Limited zoom range
  • Underwater colour needs correcting afterwards

Quick answers

Can it really go underwater without a case?

Yes, that is the entire point — it is sealed to a rated depth straight out of the box. Rinse it in fresh water after sea or pool use and check the seals are clean and closed before every swim.

Is it good for children?

Very. It is cheap, sealed against water and dust, survives being dropped, and has few enough controls that a child will not get lost. It is one of the few cameras genuinely designed to be handed over.

How is the underwater image quality?

Acceptable rather than good. Water absorbs red light, so shots taken any depth down look blue — staying shallow, keeping the sun behind you, and correcting colour afterwards all help a great deal.
