Our take

Fujifilm X-S20 review: the hybrid camera creators keep buying

In-body stabilisation, serious video specifications, huge battery life and Fujifilm’s film simulations. The X-S20 is the APS-C camera that does everything well.

What we like

  • In-body image stabilisation makes handheld work far easier
  • Excellent battery life for a mirrorless camera
  • Film simulations produce beautiful files with no editing
  • Deep video specification including 6.2K capture

What to watch

  • Priciest APS-C body Fujifilm makes
  • Kit lens does not match the body’s ability
  • Menus take some learning
  • Single card slot

Quick answers

What are Fujifilm film simulations?

Colour profiles modelled on Fujifilm’s film stocks — Velvia for saturated landscapes, Classic Chrome for muted documentary looks, Acros for black and white. They are applied in camera, so files look finished straight out of it. For many owners this is the main reason to choose Fujifilm.

Does the X-S20 have in-body stabilisation?

Yes, and it is a major practical advantage — sharper handheld stills at slower shutter speeds and noticeably steadier video without a gimbal.

X-S20 or X-M5?

The X-M5 is smaller, lighter and cheaper but has no in-body stabilisation and a smaller grip. The X-S20 has stabilisation, a deeper grip, a viewfinder and much better battery life. Choose the X-M5 for portability, the X-S20 for capability.
