Our take

Instax Mini Evo review: the hybrid instant camera that stops you wasting film

Shoot digitally, review on screen, print only the good ones. The Instax Mini Evo adds lens and film effects and doubles as a printer for your phone — and it pays for itself in unwasted film.

What we like

  • Choose what to print — no more wasted film
  • 100 effect combinations from lens and film dials
  • Doubles as a wireless printer for your phone photos
  • Handsome retro design with satisfying physical controls

What to watch

  • More expensive than a basic Instax
  • Digital image quality is modest by phone standards
  • Printing takes a deliberate extra step
  • Small prints, same as any Mini format

Quick answers

How is the Instax Mini Evo different from a normal Instax?

It captures digitally first. You see the photo on a screen, decide whether it is worth printing, and only then pull the print lever. A standard Instax commits a sheet of film every time you press the shutter, good shot or not.

Can it print photos from my phone?

Yes. Connect through the app and you can print images from your phone onto Instax Mini film, which effectively makes it a pocket photo printer as well as a camera.

What are the effects dials?

One dial selects lens effects, another film effects, and combined they produce around 100 looks — light leaks, vignettes, monochrome, retro colour. They are operated with physical dials and a print lever, which is a large part of the appeal.
