Our take

Panasonic Lumix TZ300 review: the premium pocket travel zoom

A large sensor, a long zoom and a viewfinder in a genuinely pocketable body. The TZ300 is Panasonic’s attempt to build the complete travel compact.

What we like

  • Large sensor paired with a genuinely long zoom
  • Electronic viewfinder for bright conditions
  • Pocketable given the specification
  • 4K video and 4K Photo

What to watch

  • Expensive for a fixed-lens compact
  • Lens is dim at the long end
  • Small controls suit small hands
  • Priced close to entry-level mirrorless kits

Quick answers

What makes the TZ300 different from cheaper travel zooms?

A larger sensor, which delivers cleaner images and better dynamic range, combined with a zoom range that still reaches a long way. Cheaper models give you one or the other.

Is it better than a phone?

At wide angle, a top phone competes closely. Beyond that, the zoom and the viewfinder put it in a different category — and it is a device dedicated to photography, which changes how you shoot with it.

TZ300 or an entry-level mirrorless?

A camera like the Canon EOS R50 will produce better images and can change lenses, but it will not fit in a coat pocket. That is the whole decision.
