The action camera for people whose footage keeps falling apart when the light drops. The 1-inch sensor is the headline, but the three-hour battery life is what changes how you shoot — this is the first GoPro you can genuinely leave running.

Our take

GoPro Mission 1 review: a 1-inch sensor changes what an action camera can do

GoPro’s Mission 1 pairs a 1-inch sensor with the GP3 processor for 8K video, three-hour 4K recording and much better low light. It is the biggest leap the format has had in years.

What we like

  • 1-inch sensor transforms low-light and after-dark footage
  • 8K30 and 4K120 from the new GP3 processor
  • Over three hours of 4K30 recording on one battery
  • HyperSmooth with AutoBoost and Horizon Lock

What to watch

  • Costs considerably more than a standard action camera
  • Bigger sensor means a bigger, heavier body
  • 8K files are demanding to store and edit
  • Overkill if you only ever publish 1080p

Quick answers

What size sensor does the GoPro Mission 1 have?

A 1-inch sensor — dramatically larger than the roughly 1/1.9-inch chips in mainstream action cameras. A bigger sensor gathers more light, which means cleaner footage at dusk, indoors and after dark, with less of the mushy noise action cameras are known for.

How long can the Mission 1 record?

GoPro quotes over three hours of continuous 4K30, or around five hours at 1080p30. That is a step change for the category and enough for a full day’s riding, a long descent or an entire event without swapping cells.

Does the Mission 1 shoot 8K?

Yes, up to 8K30/25, along with 4K120/100 and 1080p240/200 for slow motion. Most people will shoot 4K, but 8K gives you enormous latitude to crop, stabilise and reframe for vertical.
