Our take

Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 review: the instant camera to buy if you want zero fuss

Twist the lens to switch on, twist again for close-ups, press the button. The Instax Mini 12 is the simplest instant camera Fujifilm makes — and that is exactly why it works.

What we like

  • Genuinely foolproof — twist on, point, shoot
  • Automatic exposure gets flash-lit indoor shots right
  • Parallax-corrected viewfinder for close-ups
  • Cheapest way into the Instax ecosystem

What to watch

  • Film is the real ongoing cost, not the camera
  • No manual control whatsoever
  • Plastic build feels toy-like to some
  • Credit card-sized prints are small

Quick answers

How much does Instax Mini film cost per shot?

Buying in twin packs or bulk brings the per-print cost down substantially compared with single packs. Over a year the film will cost you far more than the camera did, so factor that in when comparing models — and buy film in multipacks.

Instax Mini 12 vs Mini 13 — what changed?

The Mini 13 is the newer model with refreshed styling and small handling improvements. Image quality and film format are the same. If the Mini 12 is cheaper where you are looking, it remains an excellent buy.

Is the Instax Mini 12 good for children?

Very. There are no settings to get wrong, the camera switches on by twisting the lens, and automatic exposure means indoor shots with flash come out properly. The main thing to teach is not to waste film.
